Our Story

It all started when...

We—the Allen family—have lived in Buena Vista for 20 years. We love it here. The place, the people. Long have we nurtured the idea of opening a shop of some kind, and we’ve decided to move forward with our newest and favorite incarnation: a killer espresso and gelato place. We enjoy these good things, and we want to invite you to do so with us. Regarding the name, we are fascinated by the history of our town and surrounding regions. The Colorado Midland Railroad was a key player in the exploration and settlement of the area, so we salute that history in the name of our shop. If you’ll humor us…

It is the late 1800s. Full of naive confidence, you’ve left most all you had ‘back east’ for westward adventure. Your life is on your back in a carpet bag. You boarded your train in eastern Kansas—already considered to be ‘frontier’—and headed into the Real Wild West. Perhaps you saw bison, deer and antelope throughout the flatland from your vantage on the train… At one stop along the way, you caught your first glimpse of the miniature Rockies, which seemed to spring out of the distant prairie… As hours gave way to days, the edges grew in height and definition, until you were skirting the foot of Pike’s Peak among the other giants west of Colorado Springs! Now, you lose your breath to the imposing phalanx of the Collegiate Peaks, whose regal faces stare back upon your steady descent of Trout Creek Pass. You’ve reached the Arkansas River Valley. What a wilderness you’ve traversed by the time you arrive at the Midland Stop, just east of the Arkansas on the hill they call Sleeping Indian. Both fear and excitement at the vast unknown invigorate your first step off the train. The Colorado Midland Railroad has brought you up here; the wide world is before you. You pick up your carpetbag…
